Raised by his mother, Elizabeth D'Agostino Trimble, in Start, Louisiana, near Monroe, McGraw grew up believing his stepfather, Horace Smith, was actually his birth father. While searching his mother's closet when he was 11 to see if he could find hidden Christmas presents, McGraw discovered his birth certificate. After his discovery his mother revealed that his birth father was Tug McGraw, and brought him to meet his father for the first time.
As a child, McGraw loved to play baseball and other competitive sports. He studied sports medicine at Northeast Louisiana University on a baseball scholarship, and roomed with former NFL quarterback Doug Pederson where he became a member of the Pi Kappa Alpha Fraternity. During this period, he learned to play guitar and would frequently perform and sing for tips, although he claims that his roommates often hid the guitar because he was so bad.
McGraw didn't have a major hit until 1994's Not a Moment Too Soon, which became best selling country album in 1994. It included the controversial song, "Indian Outlaw", as well as, "Don't Take the Girl", "Down on the Farm" and "Refried Dreams". To top it off, Tim McGraw won Academy of Country Music awards for Album of the Year and Top New Male Vocalist in 1994.
McGraw's next album, All I Want was released in 1995 and continued his run of success, debuting at number one on the country charts with "I Like It, I Love It", "She Never Lets It Go to Her Heart", "Can't Really Be Gone", "All I Want is a Life", and "Maybe We Should Just Sleep On It".
In 1996, Tim McGraw headlined the most successful country tour of the year, with Faith Hill as his supporting act. The tour's name, The Spontaneous Combustion Tour, turned out to be prophetic as Tim and Faith married in October 1996.
Another career single came his way in 2004 when the anthem "Live Like You Were Dying" dominated the airwaves. It spent seven weeks atop Billboard's country airplay chart and won two Grammys and two CMA Awards. The follow-up single, "Back When," topped the charts too. McGraw also teamed with urban artist Nelly for the pop hit, "Over and Over," which was included on McGraw's Greatest Hits Vol. 2 in 2006. He spent most of 2006 touring with Hill on the Soul2Soul2 tour, which sold more than a million concert tickets.
Tim McGraw has earned the CMA album and since had many more number 1 hits. Some of his songs include "It's Your Love," "Just to Hear You Say That You Love Me" "Let's Make Love", "Please Remember Me", "Something Like That," "Grown Men Don't Cry," "Angry All the Time" and "The Cowboy in Me." He also filmed a video for "Angel Boy" and harmonized and helped produce Jo Dee Messina's crossover hit, "Bring On the Rain."
