Tim McGraw / Faith Hill and the Soul to Soul tour:
Introduced by Ram Jam's rollicking Black Betty, with its "bam-ba-lam!" shout, Faith Hill and Tim McGraw struck a different tone as duet partners opening their Sunday night concert in Sunrise. Country music's first couple stood about 40 yards apart, back to back on opposite runways of an in-the-round stage at BankAtlantic Center, and sang the teary power balled Like We Never Loved at All. No bam-ba-lam here.
The sold-out house got an evening of domesticated country pop from two of the style's most rewarded practitioners. Hill and McGraw surrounded their individual sets with duets that were presented as delayed-gratification theater: Husband and wife sang across great distances, mostly without looking at one another, and finally met in the show's finale, I Need You, for which they shared a microphone and sat with hands clasped.
But even with marital kabuki as a thin connecting thread, the second go-round of the Hill-McGraw "Soul 2 Soul" tour improved on the original, which visited the same venue six years ago. The stage filled the room more completely this time and brought the show closer to every seat. In-show advertising for tour sponsors was eliminated. Hill, McGraw and their respective
touring bands played crisply throughout a performance totaling almost three hours and more than 30s songs.
